The Last StarFighter - For those that grew up in a crumbling town, or the Rust Belt or an isolated Trailer Park — Have you Dreamt of Centauri arriving at your door to tell you bigger things awaited your destiny?
As a kid that was such an awe inspiring concept. I first saw this at the age of 8 and when the movie was over I remember staring up at the stars, wondering if this was really possible. Was my Sega Genesis really a recruitment tool? Man, I hoped so.
Now, that last image comes from Ernest Cline, Author of Ready Player One. At his blog, Cline pointed out how the cover for some Cheap-O Fred Olen Ray bottom of the Barrel Blade Runner knock off reused the iconic suit from this film.
Now it’s not uncommon for SF movies to recycle other genre props and wardrobe. The Starship Trooper uniforms have reappeared countless times, most notably in Fire Fly. But as Cline points out, this outfit never even shows up in the movie. It’s just a slop heap of stock footage and the BeastMaster trying to collect some RoboWhores.
For those kids born yesterday on Tumblr. This movie was directed by Nick Castle, aka the Original Michael Myers and frequent John Carpenter collaborator.
